A properly performed inspection evaluates the entire fire door system, including the release mechanism, governor, closing speed, guides, hood, curtain, bottom bar, activation devices, detectors, batteries, signage, labels, and other components required by NFPA 80. It also looks for installation deficiencies, wear, damaged components, and code issues that could prevent the system from performing as intended. The objective isn’t just to determine whether the door works today. It’s to identify the problems that could cause it to fail tomorrow.
Why Installation Matters
Every listed fire door earns its fire rating by passing rigorous testing under controlled conditions. To maintain that rating, the door must be installed exactly as the manufacturer designed and tested it. Common issues but important checkboxes include:

- Unauthorized field modifications,
- Missing components,
- Weak or dead backup batteries,
- Or seemingly minor installation shortcuts can all compromise performance during an emergency.
